BACKGROUND Exposure to metalworking fluids (MWFs) is a well-known cause of occupational contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVES We aimed to i) determine the amount of nickel, chromium and cobalt in large samples of used and unused MWFs collected from metalworking plants in Denmark, and ii) evaluate a handheld x-ray fluorescence (XRF) device as a screening instrument for metals in MWFs.
