BACKGROUND AND AIM Cholestasis comprises a spectrum of liver diseases characterized by accumulation of bile acids. Bile acids and activation of the bile acid receptor FXR can inhibit autophagy, a cellular self-digestion process necessary for cell homeostasis and regeneration.
